What can I expect from Counselling?
At the initial session we will discuss your needs and expectations. At this time you can get to know about me and how I work with clients. From here you can decide whether you feel you can work with me and book further sessions. We will also discuss the boundaries to our relationship and confidentiality. At your appointment I will encourage you to talk about your emotions and feelings while I listen and support you without criticism or judgement. Counselling will help you gain a better understanding of your feelings and thought processes, and find deeper solutions to your own problems without receiving advice or being told what to do.
I’m on medication from my GP. Can Counselling still help?
Yes – A GP will often suggest counselling alongside the use of medication for anxiety and/or depression. The medication is normally used to alleviate the symptoms. Counselling can help to locate and understand the causes of the symptoms by exploring your thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
How long will it take?
This is a difficult question to answer and it’s something we would discuss in the free initial session. Some practical therapies such as CBT will take place over 5 to10 sessions if a program is developed and adhered to. However, other therapies can be open ended depending on progress. If the amount of time (or money) you may spend on counselling is a concern for you then we can discuss what we think we can (or can’t) achieve within a set number of sessions. Throughout the counselling process we will frequently assess how we feel it is progressing and how we plan to proceed.
Do I have to take a set number of sessions?
No. The number of sessions is totally to your discretion although it is always worth talking about ending with your counsellor before you do.
- Session lasts 30 minutes
